Gabriel Alves Souto De Aquino

Hi! My name is Gabriel, I am a pharmacist and, currently, a PhD candidate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) in Brazil. My work in Brazil involves the synthesis and evaluation of novel nitrogenated heterocycles to test against SARS-CoV-2. My bachelor’s thesis involved the synthesis of new inhibitors for α-glucosidase enzymes to treat Diabetes mellitus type II. I am joining the schistosomiasis team for 6 months in a partnership among WCAIR, Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC-Fiocruz), and UFRJ to synthesize new compounds to help fighting this disease. I work with organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry since 2016 in my Brazilian group (LaSOPB), and as a pharmacist and a health professional, my desire is to help people who suffer from and thrive against neglected diseases. With the acknowledgement I get at WCAIR, I can become a better chemist and enhance my knowledge in medicinal and organic chemistry
