St Johns Wort (Hypericum perforatum L.)

Why it’s in the garden

St Johns Wort contains hypericin which has been studied for its benefits in the treatment of depression due to its inhibition of the neuronal uptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and L-glutamate. It has a long history of Herbal use and a capsule preparation is generally available in health food shops.

Description

St Johns wort is a low semi-evergreen perennial shrub which has star-like yellow flowers from May to August, and bright red fruit autumn.

Care and Maintenance

St Johns Wort can take severe pruning when required, but a general trim with hedge shears every spring should keep it neat and tidy.
