St Johns Wort contains hypericin which has been studied for its benefits in the treatment of depression due to its inhibition of the neuronal uptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) and L-glutamate. It has a long history of Herbal use and a capsule preparation is generally available in health food shops.
St Johns wort is a low semi-evergreen perennial shrub which has star-like yellow flowers from May to August, and bright red fruit autumn.
St Johns Wort can take severe pruning when required, but a general trim with hedge shears every spring should keep it neat and tidy.
