Doors Open Day 2024

A wide angle view of our on-campus medicinal garden

Come and explore one of the most fascinating corners of the University of Dundee’s city campus, with a combination of garden open day and timed tours.

You might not know it, but Dundee is one of the world’s top life sciences research departments. One of our key contributions is in developing exciting new medicines – indeed, our new malaria-fighting treatment, now named Cabamiquine, is making exciting progress through clinical trials. Our WeeCAIR Medicinal Garden brings the connection between medicines and plants to life in a bright, colourful way, so do come and find out more.

A t the same time, we’ll be opening up LifeSpace, our science art research gallery. This partnership with Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design has allowed scientists and artists to explore new ways of creating. You’ll have a chance to see the gallery, and explore up the stairs for an iconic view of the city.

We’ll be in the garden from 11am – 3pm, and have timed tours at 12 and 2. We recommend the tour for those age 12+, as we will be discussing real science. The garden activities will be suitable for younger ones, but please note, there are plants such as foxgloves and lilf of the valley in the garden, which make medicines in refined form – but can be risky in their natural setting. As such, we recommend keeping a close eye on any smaller children you bring. We also welcome dogs, cats, ferrets, lizards, and any other well-behaved pets on leads to our garden.

If the weather is ropey we will move inside, to LifeSpace Science Art Research Gallery, which is directly adjancent to the garden.

Please note that to park on campus you’ll need a mobile phone. You’ll need to either use the RingGo app or make a call to pay for parking. If neither of those are possible, there is limited free parking on the nearby streets, but please do be considerate of residents and businesses.

Due to new legislation, we’d also like to let you know about a few changes we’re making. Martyn’s Law follows on from the Manchester Arena attacks, and is designed to keep us all safe at events. As such, we will need your address on the order form. We won’t use this for marketing or anything like that, and it is stored securely. We also strongly recommend not bringing large bags. We have nowhere to store them, and security considerations mean we may have to carry out random searches. Thanks for your understanding around this.
